A tour of Martinique unfolds a sensory delight, where lush landscapes, historic plantations, and turquoise shores beckon exploration. From the history of Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife to a taste of Martinique rum, each stop reveals the tapestry of French-Caribbean culture and natural beauty.
To start today’s adventure, drive from Trois Ilets, to the Pagerie Habitation, where Napoleon Bonaparte’s wife Josephine lived the first sixteen years of her life. Her family owned this estate in 18th century, and a guided visit is your chance to learn all about this mysterious – and very influential – teenager before she rose to fame and fortune.
Heading inland, a panoramic drive brings you to the city of Le François on the east side of Martinique. Along the way, a scenic odyssey will be unveiled with winding coastal roads offering breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.
Next, you’ll visit the Plantation House where George H. W. Bush and François Mitterand – Presidents of United States and France respectively – met in 1991. The house is beautifully decorated with authentic period furniture.
And finally, you will visit the sugar estate and see the rum distillery and taste a little Martinique rum, before returning to Trois-Ilets.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
