Acropolis, Athens
The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. An exceptional group of artists under the guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. The most important monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis and the small temple Athena Nike.
Depart Piraeus for a panoramic drive through the city of Athens. Watch for the Corinthian-style Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. The latter once separated the Greek city from Hadrian's new Roman city. Pass the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Evzoni Guards in their colorful National uniform.
From the comfort of your coach, view the University, the National Academy and the Library -- impressive buildings constructed in neo-Classical style. Traffic permitting, you will stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, built in 1896 for the first modern Olympic Games.
You will visit the breathtaking ancient upper city of temples that boasts many instantly recognizable structures. The principal buildings of the Acropolis are the Propylaia, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechteion and the Parthenon from the 5th century BC -- the glorious age of Pericles. Your guide will also point out traces of buildings from various other periods, including the Mycenean era (2nd millennium BC).Your visit to the Acropolis is aided and enhanced by the use of Virtual Reality goggles. You simply put on a pair of VR goggles to immerse yourself in a different world by viewing the surrounding architecture as it stood thousands of years ago, when it was newly built. This is a truly remarkable experience and no description can fully do it justice.
Enjoy some free time on the Acropolis; then, meet up with your coach and guide at a prearranged time and place to return to the ship at Piraeus.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
