Experience a slice of the real Barcelona, including the Old Town with its charming narrow streets and tiny shops -- an integral part of the history in Barcelona from the Gothic era to the present day.
Departing the pier by motor coach, you will disembark in the Gothic Quarter and explore the Santa Caterina Market, one of the oldest markets in Barcelona, in operation since 1848. Hundreds of fishmongers' stalls sell seafood so fresh it's still cold from the ocean; butchers offer lean cuts and exotic sausages; and fruit and vegetable stands span all three levels. Next, you'll head to the Boqueria Market. This remarkable enterprise is mentioned in documents dating back to AD 1217. Back then, tables were installed near the entrance to the city and farmers would sell their meat there. In 1826, the market was formalized and legally recognized and, in 1911, the new fish market opened. The metal roof that still exists today was added in 1914.
Enjoy some free time in Barcelona to explore in the vicinity of the Plaza Catalunya, packed with street entertainers, artists and musicians.
Then, you'll have more time on your own at Las Ramblas -- an open-air street market with prestigious goods from all over the world.
At the end of your free time, meet up with the group for a taste of tapas at a local restaurant before you return to the ship.
Please note: This is a walking tour covering fairly even surfaces. Wear comfortable walking shoes. A snack will be offered at each market. On Friday and Saturdays, your guide will offer an introduction to the Boqueria Market outside the marketplace; then, you will explore on your own inside. The guide will let you know where to meet before heading to the restaurant for tapas. Tour does not operate on Sundays or holidays. This option is available only to guests who are returning to the ship. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
