Time and traffic permitting, enjoy a panoramic drive through Barcelona -- a light introduction to this marvelous city -- before you ride by coach to the Montserrat Mountain Ridge.
The irregular peaks of Catalonia's most famous mountain -- Montserrat -- are visible from miles around. Montserrat is a cultural, religious and natural symbol of the area. Legend holds that some shepherds found a statue of a black Virgin Mary on Montserrat. When they tried to move her, the cart got stuck, which they took as a sign that she should stay on the mountain. This peculiar mountain range is the site of the basilica that entices pilgrims to visit La Moreneta -- the Black Madonna. She is the patron-virgin of Catalonia.
Montserrat is also home to a Benedictine Monastery founded in the 11th century. It is situated on a natural platform at 2,380 feet above sea level. The Benedictine community now numbers 80 monks, and has served the shrine for almost a thousand years, dedicated to a life of prayer, work and welcoming pilgrims.
During the academic year, if time permits, you may see Escolania -- the oldest boys' choir in Europe.
Please note: Travel time to Montserrat is approximately one hour each way. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed. Due to many visitors and pilgrims at Montserrat, be prepared for long lines to see the Black Madonna; your visit is time permitting. The Black Madonna can be closed for viewing without prior notice due to religious events. The route is winding. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
