A rugged mountain not far from Barcelona is home to one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Spain -- the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat. Since the 12th century, pilgrims have been drawn to the mountain to venerate the miraculous statue of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta). On this half-day excursion you will drive to the mountains outside of Barcelona to Montserrat and visit the Basilica belonged to Benedictine Monastery, where you may hear a children's choir perform (if available, only during academic year). After the visit, hike to the funicular of Santa Cova, walking on natural paths used by pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Learn how the movement of the earth's crust produced an uplift, causing the inland sea to disappear and leaving the rock formations exposed to erosion, bringing about the appearance of unique calcified deposits. Spend some free time exploring the monastery, situated on a natural platform at an elevation of 2,380 feet, before returning to Barcelona. Please note: The boys’ choir may be canceled without notice. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a light jacket, as it may be cool in the mountains. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed. The Basilica closed from 10:30am to 12noon.
