Leave Bonifacio's chalky cliff landscape and head to Porto Vecchio -- one of Corsica's most beautiful bays. From here, you'll head inland towards Bavella, climbing up to the Ospedale Forest. Enjoy the views across the hills and down to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The hamlet of Ospedale owes its name to a hospital built on site during the Roman colonization of the island. Arriving at the Ospedale Barrage, situated among rocks and pine trees, discover a manmade reservoir. Continuing to the mountain village of Zonza -- gateway of the Alta Rocca (high rock) region -- you'll drive through pine and chestnut forests. The Col de Bavella at 3,800 feet above sea level boasts a statue dedicated to Notre Dame des Neiges (Our Lady of the Snows) and a breathtaking view over the Aiguilles de Bavella. These granite needles stretch skyward and embellish a region of exceptional wild and unspoiled countryside. Plants and wildflowers, wild boar, eagles and the famous mouflon (wild sheep with curly horns) all flourish here.
Savor a typical Corsican lunch before returning to sea level via a different route through the villages of Levie, Carbini and Figari.
