L’Ile Rousse straddles a long sandy curve of land backed by mountains. The town is named after the off-shore russet-colored rock which is now home to the town’s ferry port and lighthouse. The architecture of the town largely dates from the late 18th and early 19th Century with a collection of attractive buildings including the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the center of town. No visit to the old town would be complete without a visit to the daily covered food market in a building reminiscent of an ancient Greek temple with replica classical columns. You will have the opportunity to browse the stalls and soak up the buzz as you see locals go about their daily life purchasing items from charcuterie to cheese to home-made bread.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
