You'll cross the Canakkale Bridge (1915) from the Dardanelles to the European side of Turkey. This eye-catching structure is a great feat of engineering. It is one of the longest bridges in the world and indeed remains the world's longest suspension bridge. Connecting Asia and Europe, it exemplifies its location with a harmonious blend of aesthetic elegance and technical prowess.
Your destination is Gelibolu Historic National Park -- Gallipoli. To honor the 500,000 soldiers who lost their lives here, the peninsula has been transformed into a World War I memorial site with proud monuments set off by the picturesque Ariburnu Cliffs.
Begin at the Cape Helles sector of Gallipoli, where French and British troops landed, before a lunch of traditional Turkish cuisine.
This afternoon, visit the ANZAC Sector of the peninsula, dedicated to the forces of Australia and New Zealand sent mercilessly to their deaths at the behest of British commanders. You will view Brighton Beach, Seddulbahir, and the English Memorial. You will also see the Turkish Memorial, the Beach Cemetery on the southern tip of ANZAC Cove, and Ari Burnu Cemetery. At the Lone Pine Australian Memorial, participate in a wreath-laying ceremony. You will pass Johnston's Jolly and the French Memorial en route back to the ship.
