Perfect for those wishing to see Pergamum in an agreeably snappy fashion, this tour leaves the port at Dikili for a 45-minute journey north through beautiful countryside.
Once at the site of ancient Pergamum, leave the coach and board a cable car for the 15-minute ascent to the Acropolis, looming 900 feet above the town. It was once surrounded by three walls, but very few traces remain. Pergamum was first settled by the Aeolic Greeks in the 8th century BC. Visit the Library of Pergamum, second only to the magnificent ancient Library of Alexandria. Many scholars and teachers lived in Pergamum and parchment paper was invented here. See the ruins of the Temple of Trajan, built by Hadrian. Its Zeus Altar -- perhaps the finest altar ever built -- dates back to 180 BC.
Return to the ship after this interesting and efficient visit to one of the great cities of Asia Minor.
Please note: Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The cable car is not recommended for guests with a fear of heights.
