Routes of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain
"A network of four Christian pilgrimage routes that is an extension of the Route of Santiago de Compostela, encompassing some of the earliest pilgrimage routes since the discovery of a tomb believed to be that of St. James the Greater. It includes a built heritage of historical importance created to meet the needs of pilgrims, including cathedrals, hospitals, hostels and even bridges."
Santiago de Compostela (Old Town)
"This pilgrimage site became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. Destroyed by Muslims in the 10th century, it was later completely rebuilt. With its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque buildings, the Old Town of Santiago is one of the world's most beautiful urban areas.""This pilgrimage site became a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. A winding trail through forests, mountains and along rivers, it is one of Santiago's most beautiful walking routes.
During your trek, you will be immersed in nature for a unique experience that allows you to reconnect the world around you as well as experiencing the spirituality of this route for the Christian pilgrims that make this trek annually.
The walk ends in Santiago, with a visit to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important Catholic sanctuaries in Europe. It is believed to be the burial place of the Apostle Saint James the Greater, patron saint of Spain and Christian martyr. Admire the incredible architecture of the façade and learn about its construction and history.
Following your time at the Cathedral, enjoy a lovely tapas lunch, at the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos. Built in 1486, the hotel is considered not only the oldest continuously operating hotel in the world but also one of the most beautiful in Europe.
After lunch, you will have some free time to explore the old town independently before returning to Ferrol.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps. Wear a hat, bring sunscreen and a backpack with rain gear. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed.
