Board a mini-coach for a historic drive highlighting some of Gibraltar's most celebrated sites. Along the way, you'll pass the World War II airport runway, expanded with rocks blasted from the tunnels of Gibraltar, Princess Caroline's Battery, and the remains of an ancient Moorish castle, proudly flying the Union flag and still displaying the battle scars and canon dents from the sieges of Gibraltar.
On Europa Point, check out the eye-catching red-and-white striped lighthouse that dominates the landscape. First lit in 1941, the lighthouse was a welcome addition for sailors who knew the difficulty of maneuvering around Gibraltar Bay. Coexisting on the site is the southernmost mosque in Europe, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque.
Your tour of the Great Seige Tunnels begins at Hays Level -- the entrance to the northern defenses sector. You'll be introduced to the tunnel's history through a static exhibition featuring photographs and a complete tunnel map. Then, continue with your guide to explore this massive underground fortress with a network of tunnels 30 miles long. There's a hospital, power station, military headquarters and room to support 10,000 troops and civilians. From Jock's Balcony, take in the incredible views of the airfield below.
When you exit the tunnels, reboard your mini-coach for the scenic drive back to port. Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Please note: Transportation is by mini-coach with a driver-guide only. Wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, and steps. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes.
