All roads may lead to Rome elsewhere, but on Gozo, all roads lead to Victoria. Known as Rabat to the locals, the island's capital is very much its heartbeat
One of the best ways to appreciate the warmth, beauty, feel, sound and scent of the capital is taking a walk with your guide among the back streets and alleyways, all of which seem to lead to St George's Square, It-Tokk or Savina Square. Artisan shops line the route, with artists hard at work making intricate pieces of jewelry or art.
Your time in Victoria would not be complete without a visit to the Citadel -- a historic fortress dating back to 1500 BC. It dominates the capital's skyline, and within its walls lies a fine 17th-century Baroque cathedral designed by the architect of the Cathedral of Mdina in Malta. This church stands on the site of a Roman temple to the god Juno.
Walk with your guide around the impressive fortifications of the recently-restored city.
From here, return to your coach and transfer back to the tender. Guests who wish to stay in Victoria to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must meet the guide at a predesignated meeting point in time to return to the ship.
Please note: Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Each guest is responsible for returning his/her headset after the tour; missing or damaged headsets incur a fee of 80 euros.
The walk uphill to the Citadel is strenuous. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
