In the past, volcanic activity has put El Hierro on the map and in the international news. The underwater volcanic eruption in the La Restinga area had enabled seismologists to analyze the behavior of the magma and pyrolytic stones that popped up and floated in the sea. This was the first time an underwater volcano had been studied with modern equipment.
Today, you will visit this area where you can see the aftermath of the eruption that happened years ago.
Learn from your knowledgeable Guide about the different stone formations, and the underwater volcanic eruption that shaped the island’s landscape.
Next, head towards the Mirador de las Playas for an excellent view of the zone. This is the ideal vantage point for taking some snapshots of the area. Visit the Restingolita Museum to watch a film showing the past volcanic events.
From there, you'll drive to La Restinga -- a pleasant village offering a chance to have a cup of coffee.
Return to the pier from here.
Please note: Bring a warm jacket as it is cooler at high elevations. Wear sturdy non-skid, closed-toe walking shoes (no flip-flops or sandals). The volcanic terrain is uneven with some sharp rocks. There are steep, winding roads to reach the viewpoints. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
