In the past, volcanic activity has put El Hierro on the map and in the international news. An underwater volcanic eruption in the La Restinga area in 2011 enabled seismologists to analyze the behavior of the magma and pyrolytic stones that popped up and floated in the sea. This was the first time an underwater volcano had been studied with modern equipment.
Today, you will visit this area to see the aftermath of that eruption. Learn from your knowledgeable guide about the different stone formations and the underwater volcanic eruption that shaped the island's landscape.
Next, head to the Mirador de las Playas for an excellent view of the zone. This is the ideal vantage point for taking some snapshots. Step inside the Geopark Visitor Center to watch a film depicting past volcanic events.
From there, you'll drive to La Restinga -- a pleasant village -- with a break for a cup of coffee (at your own expense).
Return to the pier afterward.
Please note: Bring a warm jacket as it is cooler at high elevations. Wear sturdy non-skid, closed-toe walking shoes (no flip-flops or sandals). The volcanic terrain is uneven, with some sharp rocks. There are steep, winding roads to reach the viewpoints. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
