Discover magnificent Ephesus, a stunning standout among the ancient ruins remaining in the world today. This incredible city, founded by either the Hittites or the Carians and Lelegs, later was to become the honeymoon playground of Antony and Cleopatra.
On your walking visit, don't miss the glorious Celsus Library façade, restored and reconstructed in the 1970s to its former splendor, as well as the Grand Amphitheatre with a capacity of more than 25,000 people. To put its presence into dazzling, age-defying perspective, this amphitheater is the site where St Paul preached to the Ephesians in the first century AD and where rocker Elton John held an unforgettable concert 2,000 years later -- truly a venue for the ages. You'll also see the Temple of Hadrian and drive by the site of the Temple of Artemis -- one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Visit the Terrace Houses located opposite Hadrian's Temple. The wealthy and important people of Ephesus once inhabited these houses, which are finely decorated with mosaics and frescoes, giving a true impression of the ancient lifestyle. Those on the upper slopes are reached via steps and situated on the slopes of Bulbul Mountain, with the roof of one house forming the terrace of the one above it.
On the way back to Izmir, you will have a chance to enjoy a demonstration of carpet weaving and dyeing, accompanied by some refreshments, at a local weaving center.
Please note: The two-hour walk is at a slow pace and mostly downhill, with the exception of the Terrace Houses, which are on a slope and require some stair climbing. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and many steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Travel time to Ephesus is approximately 60 minutes each way.
