The town of Chora, the capital and port of the island of Naxos, is the quintessential Greek Island town. On one side of the port, is the Portara -- the giant entrance of the unfinished Temple of Apollo. It is joined to the main island by a narrow causeway and is the island's claim to fame.
Starting from the port you will commence your walk through the narrow cobblestone streets of Naxos while your guide brings to life the history of this remarkable island.
Climb towards Old Town area, perched atop a hill with a Venetian fortress. From on high, you will take in the spectacular views of the Old Town and the harbor below.
At the Archaeological Museum, you will see exhibits from all of the great eras of Naxos' history, from the Cycladic Period and the Classic Greek Period to the Roman and Frankish occupations. Follow your guide through the Epitopio section. A glass walkway allows you to see the Mycenaean treasures below.
At the end of your tour you'll have a chance to try the local drink called Kitron. Made of a distillation of the leaves of the local citrus fruit, it a deliciously refreshing drink, and you will have earned a glass or two after your walking tour.
