Departing the port of Kavala, you’re headed to the Nestos River Delta.
The Nestos flows from the Rila mountains of Bulgaria into the Aegean Sea near the island of Thasos. It forms a delta on the coastal plain and you will take a brief walk here and snap some photos before continuing to Xanthi.
The city of Xanthi –--known also as “the city of a thousand colors”--is rich in history and culture. These are vestiges of the various conquerors that have left their mark on the city. A walking tour will take you through the Old Town for a look at some architecture that dates to the Ottoman empire, the city flourished with the tobacco trade, due mainly to the quality of the tobacco that was produced.
You will then proceed to a traditional taverna for local mezedes (snacks) and wine before you return to Kavala.
