Departing the port of Kavala, you're headed to the Nestos River Delta.
The Nestos flows from the Rila mountains of Bulgaria into the Aegean Sea near the island of Thasos. It forms a delta on the coastal plain, and you will take a brief walk here and snap some photos before continuing to Xanthi.
The city of Xanthi, "the City of a Thousand Colors," is rich in history and culture -- vestiges of the various conquerors that have left their mark on the city. A walking tour takes you through the Old Town for a look at some architecture that dates back to the Ottoman Empire when the city prospered due to the tobacco trade.
You will then visit a traditional taverna for local mezedes (snacks) and wine before returning to Kavala.
