Tour along the coast to the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said—an artist's paradise with blue and white sugar-cube houses scattered across the hillside above the sea. There will be ample time to stroll, admire the typical architecture and shop local handicrafts, or to relax over some refreshing mint tea. Just down the hill lie the impressive ruins of the city of Carthage, founded in 800 BC by the Phoenicians. It was from here that Hannibal began his legendary journey that ended in an elephant ride across the Pyrenees and the Alps into Italy. The Romans eventually prevailed, and they destroyed and rebuilt Carthage in 146 BC, and it became the Roman Empire's second city. Visit the impressive Roman Baths of Antonius Pius, the Sactuary of Tophet and Byra Hill, where Carthage was supposedly founded by Queen Dido. You will view many other sites on your panoramic drive through Carthage, including the remains of the Punic Ports and the theatre.
