"The Aeolian Islands provide an outstanding record of volcanic island-building and destruction, and ongoing volcanic phenomena. Studied since at least the 18th century, the islands have provided the science of vulcanology with examples of two types of eruption (Vulcanian and Strombolian) and thus have featured prominently in the education of geologists for more than 200 years. The site continues to enrich the field of vulcanology."
Discover Lipari Island -- as you travel by comfortable, air-conditioned motorcoach with an informative guide. You will stop to enjoy the magnificent view of some of the other islands of the archipelago, including Vulcano, Salina and Panarea. Take in the immense stretches of clean, sparkling sea, and jagged coastlines of various shapes and unusual color -- the green of the lush vegetation, the black, red and gray of the volcanoes, and the yellow of the rocks and the beaches.
The 1.5-hour ride brings you to the castle area where you will see St Bartolomeo Church. Visit the nearby archaeological area and the Aeolian Museum, which is comprised of five sections -- prehistoric, classical, epigraphic, minor islands and vulcanologic -- and view the large collection of valuable materials excavated from the islands since 1946. As you leave the museum, your guide leads you back to the pier.
You will be close to the main shopping area where you have free time to browse on your own before returning to the ship.
Please note: There is an approximately 20- to 30-minute leisurely walk along the main street to reach the coach; then mostly moderate walking except for a steep/uphill road and some steps to reach the museum. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Tour does not operate on holidays. You will be escorted by the tour guide approximately 800m to reach the tour buses once you arrive at the pier by tender.
