Volcanic Milos is the westernmost of the Cyclades islands, boasting stunning beaches, coves and geological formations. Since ancient times the island has been quarried for its minerals and obsidian. Milos is often referred to as a natural geology lab-today's excursion provides the opportunity to see photograph the island's unusual landscapes. You will visit Sarakiniko Beach with its almost lunar landscape-the result of numerous volcanic eruptions. See the Neolithic town of Filakopi and the caves of Papafragas from an excellent vantage point. These caves served as hideouts for pirates in Byzantine times. Then visit Plaka, the picturesque capital of the island, perched 820 feet above sea level and offering breathtaking views of the island. Stroll the narrow streets, perhaps stopping to enjoy a coffee (at your own expense) in one of the many local cafés. Before returning to the ship you will see where the ancient Greek Venus de Milo statue was discovered in 1820. Keep an eye out for the Roman Theater and as your guide discusses the early Christian catacombs found on the island.
Please note: Availability is very limited. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
