Discover the timeless charms of the fortress town of Monemvasia. The small island of Monemvasia is one of Greece's best-kept secrets. Its medieval town was carved from a sea rock and is only accessible by causeway.
As you walk through the narrow castle gate, you'll be transported back to a rich cultural heyday. Follow your guide along the well-worn cobblestone main street to the very heart of the citadel. A ship's canon sits in the Main Square -- a cold welcome to all visitors.
Explore Monemvasia's 13th-century Christ Elkomenos Cathedral, which boasts an impressive barrel-vaulted nave and houses an ancient icon masterpiece from the 14th century.
Across the square, housed in the 16th-century Turkish mosque, is the Archaeological Museum. It exhibits artifacts found within the fortress walls, including architectural sculptures and ceramic objects from the Early Christian period up to Byzantine times.
Finally, enjoy some free time to meander through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways and arches shaded by bougainvillea. Browse in the boutiques and workshops that line the main street, or watch the world go by from one of the many cafés or tavernas (at your own expense).
Please note: Tour requires approximately 1.5 hours of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
