This rare excursion is devoted to pleasing all the senses, first by meandering through a colorful Muslim garden and then with a tasting some exceptional vintages and local tapa at a traditional wine cellar. Departing from the pier, it's a scenic drive north through the fertile Lecrin River Valley. This area, set in the Granada province, was once a Moorish stronghold and a North African influence is still felt more than 500 years later.
In the beautiful village of Velez de Benaudalla, you'll spend a delightful hour exploring the treasured Nazari Gardens -- one of the last remaining Muslim gardens in southern Spain. Originally designed to stimulate the five senses, the lush gardens are immensely peaceful. Walking about the grounds, with the flowers in full bloom and countless aromas wafting through the air, is often described as a spiritual experience. Be sure to stroll through the iconic stand of cypress trees, which are so tall they dwarf everything below.
Continuing on, you'll drive to the esteemed Bodega Señorio de Nevada for a tour of this historic winery. It is located in a valley where the conquering Romans produced wine centuries ago. During the tasting of one tapa and wine that follows your guided tour, you will likely sample vintages produced from Spain's native Tempranillo grape. The grape tends to ripen early -- a trait reflected in its name, which means 'little early one'. The resulting wines are usually spicy, aromatic and flavorful. Afterwards, you'll re-board your coach for the leisurely drive back to the pier.
Please note: Tour requires approximately 2½ hours of moderate walking/standing. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking terrain with many steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen. Minimum age to participate in the wine tasting is 21 years.
