A Mindful Living Tour
Nikopolis, an ancient Greco-Roman city, is situated in the suburbs of the modern city of Preveza. It was built in 31 BC by the Roman Emperor Octavian -- nephew of Julius Caesar -- in celebration of his victory in the Battle of Aktion over the Egyptian fleet of Anthony and Cleopatra. That particular battle is now believed to have had a profound impact on the course of history, and this new city represented Octavian's successful unification of the Roman Empire under his administration. Geographically, Nikopolis was a major transport and communications hub, linking the eastern and western halves of the Mediterranean. Most of its inhabitants were detainees, captured by the Romans from nearby cities. With such a labor force at their disposal, the Romans were able to develop Nikopolis very quickly, and several benefits were granted to the inhabitants. It was a beautifully-built city, with temples, market, theatres, gymnasiums, thermal baths, mansion houses and other monuments. You will view from a distance the ancient city ruins and admire the major remaining structures.
Visit the recently-renovated museum, housing an extensive array of impressive, locally-excavated finds.
Head to the relatively modern city of Preveza, whose idyllic Old Town area is a joy to behold. A brief guided tour of the city will be followed by some free time to further explore on your own or just sit and enjoy a cooling refreshment from the many cafés found here (at your own expense).
Please note: Travel time is approximately an hour and 20 minutes each way. Tour does not operate on Mondays.
