A scenic 45-minute drive brings you to the western side of Elba.
You'll arrive at the quaint village of Marciana, the island's oldest settlement and one that has retained its medieval appearance and charm.
Begin an exhilarating, approximately a 1½-hour (two-mile) hike on easy-to-moderate mountain paths and terrain along the slopes of Mount Capanne. This formation has been slowly eroded by the wind, creating curiously shaped natural sculptures. Along the way you'll see the diverse vegetation and forests of ilex, pine and chestnut trees. Enjoy breathtaking views over the northern side of the island with its cool and refreshing mountain climate, despite its proximity to the sea.
Visit the Church of San Cerbone. Saint Cerbone retired here during the 6th century to escape the Longobards' persecution.
Continue downhill for about 30 minutes to end your hike at the village of Poggio. Head to a rustic local restaurant for a well-earned lunch, as you relax and take in the great views over the ocean. Local specialties are on the menu and you'll enjoy a taste of Elba before driving back to Portoferraio.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring a sunhat. This tour requires extensive walking over uneven terrain, mountain paths/roads with some steps. Participants must be in good physical condition. Wear sturdy walking shoes.
