It is a pleasant one-hour drive to the village of Salses le Château, named for the incredibly well preserved Salses Castle. Originally built as a Spanish fortress for King Ferdinand of Aragon—the King of Spain during the discovery of the New World—the castle sits on a narrow, flat stretch of land along the Mediterranean coast. It is through this passage that Hannibal’s army crept into Italy in 218 BC. Your guide will take you on a walking tour of the castle and tell you about its history and the importance of its strategic location at the ancient border between France and Spain. After your visit you will re-board the motor coach for a drive to the wine region of Rivesaltes, famous for its soft wines and scenic landscapes. Visit Château Valmy—a well-known vineyard—and enjoy a wine tasting before returning to Port Vendres.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
