Etruscan Necropolises of Cerveteri & Tarquinia UNESCO World Heritage Site
Leave your coach at the gate to Tarquinia's Old Town, the location of the elegant 15th-century Palazzo Vitelleschi, which houses the National Museum. Its collection of Etruscan artifacts, taken from the nearby tombs and from other sites in the area, is one of Italy's most important. Besides pottery, gold jewelry, magical mirrors, and sarcophagi, its prized possessions are two winged horses that once adorned a 4th-century BC temple. Several reconstructed tombs are decorated with wall paintings that were removed from the site for safekeeping.
Enjoy free time following your museum visit so you can enjoy the ambience of the quaint Old Town.
Re-join the coach for the short ride to a huge underground necropolis. The UNESCO World Heritage site Etruscan Necropolis covers nearly 2.5 miles of rough terrain where the ancient Etruscan city once stood. Thousands of tombs have been discovered here dating from the 6th to 1st centuries BC. Approximately 200 tombs have been excavated, but it is believed the surrounding fields contain hundreds more that remain untouched.
Pause for a light, delicious tasting of Italian delicacies, which typify the UNESCO-listed Intangible Heritage of the Italian Diet, at a local farmhouse before you return to the ship in Civitavecchia.
Please note: Tour does not operate on Mondays. Tour requires walking over uneven surfaces and inclines. The Etruscan Necropolis is not advisable for guests suffering from claustrophobia.
