The port and city of Sète boast a very special location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Thau Lagoon. Perhaps because of its particular geographical configuration, Sète has quite a reputation for fabulous local recipes based on terroir products -- meaning products that absorb and reflect the flavors of many aspects of the local environment, from soil-type to climatic conditions and topography.
This walking tour will allow you to you discover the most traditional areas of Sète -- those along the main canal -- where you will feel the special local Mediterranean atmosphere and perhaps even be reminded of Venice. During the second part of the tour, your guide will lead you to the covered market -- the meeting place for many local people buying fresh produce. You'll notice that the market is as much a social venue as a commercial one. Meet some stall-keepers and taste local products. Sample a small octopus pie with a glass of white wine, or taste some fresh oysters from the Thau Lagoon. Another taste treat is a cookie called a Zézette -- a must-try (at your own expense).
Please note: Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. A snack will be provided.
