At first glance, the historic town of Santa Cruz de la Palma closely resembles other the Atlantic/Mediterranean towns of the Canaries. However, hidden within its core are some age-old treasures that remind the visitor that the city was founded in 1493 and was once heavily fortified to withstand a constant stream of pirate attacks.
Starting out on a walk with your guide, you will discover streetscapes featuring colorful buildings and laced with typical balconies. In Spain Square, a whitewashed church and the Town Hall dominate the space.
From Santa Cruz de la Palma you will proceed south and inland to the town of San Isidro to visit a tobacco factory manufacturing handmade cigars. Cigar production has been a significant part of La Palma craftsmanship since the 19th century, when immigrants came to the island from Cuba. Cigar-making is a process that can't be rushed. It begins in the field, with the planting of the tobacco crop, careful tending, timely harvest and classifying and curing of the leaves. These are eventually cut and rolled -- used by cigar-makers to create fine, tasty and pungent cigars designed to please the palate of the most discriminating connoisseur.
