This full-day excursion offers an enlightening visit to Mt Etna and the town of Catania.
Depart the pier by motorcoach for a brief sightseeing overview of Syracuse before you head to Catania. A short panoramic drive through the town by motorcoach reveals some the Catania's highlights. You'll stop near the Piazza Duomo to view the cathedral, the university, and the historic city center with its impressive architecture.
Visit the famous Terme Achilliane -- a barrel-vaulted chamber beneath the cathedral in Catania. An underground corridor divides the Roman structures from the foundations of the cathedral. This complex is believed to date back to the 3rd century BC.
A one-hour drive brings you to Mt Etna -- a UNESCO World Heritage site and Europe's tallest active volcano with its summit at 11,000 feet. The lower Cratere Silvestri area, where you will stop at the viewpoint, lies at an elevation of approximately 6,600 feet asl. From a vantage point, you'll look out across the Gulf of Catania and view the forests, fields and vineyards.
Pause for lunch at a nearby restaurant before return drive to the ship.
