Perched at 2,300 feet above sea level, Montserrat is home to one of the greatest Benedictine monastic complexes of the Middle Ages. You will have approximately 90 minutes to explore an amazing set of buildings, including the stunning Montserrat Basilica. A superb example of Roman architecture, the basilica is decorated with statues of Christ and the Twelve Apostles. The interior is renowned for its gilded wooden sculpture of Catalonia's patron saint, La Moreneta, also known as the Black Madonna. Pay homage to the silver altar dedicated to the Virgin or visit the museum, which boasts works of art by El Greco, Dalí and Picasso. Then, stroll in the plaza, browsing in the many shops before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant.
Drive through the lush Catalonian countryside, rich with vineyards and olive, almond and hazelnut orchards, to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia. This is the nexus of Catalonia's wine industry and you'll visit a Modernist-style winery for a cava tasting. Codorníu Cellar has a family history of winemaking dating back to the 16th century. It is the oldest family business in Spain and one of the oldest in the world.
Visit the largest underground cellar in Europe by small wheeled train and enjoy a tasting of two types of Codorniu cava (sparkling wine).
Return to Tarragona at the end of an exhilarating day.
Please note: Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts are not allowed. Tour timing may preclude viewing the Black Madonna if the lines are extremely long. The Black Madonna can be unpredictably closed for viewing due to religious events. The route to Montserrat is winding. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Tour sequence may vary. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Dress in layers. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Corkage policy: Wine purchased on this tour is exempt from the onboard corkage fee (offer limited to one bottle of wine per person).
