Enjoy a relaxing scenic journey through Provence and visit the medieval village of Le Castellet. You'll also sample some wines of this region that is renowned for bold vintages and fabulous olive oil.
Le Castellet is a typical Provencal hilltop village, perched on the edge of a cliff. It evokes the feeling that you've stepped into a 15th-century fortified hamlet. Admire the many historical landmarks -- sections of the ancient ramparts still stand; narrow cobblestone streets run hither and yon; and stone houses are adorned with climbing bougainvillea and overflowing pots of geraniums and lavender.
The hilltop castle (outside visit only) provides spectacular views of limestone cliffs and a tapestry of vineyards.
There are also many 21st-century diversions here -- art galleries, gift shops, boutiques and souvenir shops are tucked around the corner of nearly every square.
You are invited to stop at the Domaine de Souviou Winery (or similar) to taste some local wines. This really beautiful Provencal winery features an adjacent chapel and is surrounded by 79 acres of vineyard. Some very fine wines are produced here, and the 2,500 olive trees are famous for their delicious olive oil. Your wine tasting session includes three types of wine. Over the time, the wines of Bandol have become among the most internationally-recognized wines of Provence. There are many different factors that determine the aroma and taste of wine, from the age and varieties of vines to the climate, soil and terrain, collectively known as terroir .
Please note: Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough terrain and cobblestones with many steps. Minimum age to taste wine is 18 years. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Some shops are closed on Mondays and during the off-peak season.
