Sanary-sur-Mer is a traditional fishing port in the heart of Provence's coastal region. Its ancient natural harbor is home of some heritage vessels dating back as far as 1895, as well as old Provencal fishing boats locally known as pointus, named for their pointed bow and stern.
Lined with palm trees and homes painted in the pastel shades of Provence, the harbor sports a 13th-century tower, which offers panoramic views from the top. Sitting atop the town's main hill, the 16th century Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitie chapel is noteworthy for its simple architectural design.
Wander through Sanary-sur-Mer's pedestrian-only streets and discover its many charms and delights. Numerous arts and crafts workshops, designer stores and fashion boutiques huddle here.
The village is home to a typical Provencal market every morning, sure to awaken the senses with its riotous colors and scents. Discover the many vendors selling fruits, vegetables, seafood, local wine, garlic, olive oil, honey and cheese, as well as textiles, accessories, flowers and plants. The general daily market in Sanary-sur-Mer takes place every morning along the Estienne d'Orves alleys; the flower market is on the Place de la Mairie; the fish market is at the harbor. The largest market is Wednesday mornings at the fairground.
Make the most of your free time to purchase a coffee (at your own expense) at one of the cafes, or meandering through the market to browse for souvenirs.
Please note: Market stalls vary seasonally and there are fewer stalls during inclement weather. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
