Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries: Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar
This property consists of 6 defense works in Italy, Croatia and Montenegro. The fortifications throughout the Stato da Mar protected the sea routes and ports in the Adriatic Sea. They were necessary to support the expansion and authority of the Serenissima. The introduction of gunpowder led to significant shifts in military techniques and architecture that are reflected in the design of fortifications throughout Europe.
You will stop to visit the St Nicholas Fortress, situated at the entrance to St Anthony's Channel. The fortress was constructed during the 16th century to protect the town from the Turkish attacks. It is one of the strongest maritime fortifications on the Croatian coast.
Zlarin Island is known as 'the green island' or 'the coral island', as majority of its inhabitants were once coral divers. Cars are not allowed on Zlarin, so you'll stroll down the promenade before you head back to the boat.
On Kaprije Island, named for capers, whose buds are used as a spice in Mediterranean cooking, take advantage of some free time to purchase lunch on your own at a local restaurant.
There are two typical Dalmatian fishing villages on Prvic Island. Prvic Luka and Prvic Sepurine are home to approximately 400 inhabitants each. You will have free time on the promenade.
Return to Vodice.
