Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries: Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar
This property consists of 6 defense works in Italy, Croatia and Montenegro. The fortifications throughout the Stato da Mar protected the sea routes and ports in the Adriatic Sea. They were necessary to support the expansion and authority of the Serenissima. The introduction of gunpowder led to significant shifts in military techniques and architecture that are reflected in the design of fortifications throughout Europe.
Spend a relaxing day on a Zodiac boat ride through the Sibenik Archipelago, made up of 249 islands, of which only six are inhabited. The islanders live mainly off the land and the sea, growing olives and grapes and fishing in the clear blue sea.
Stop briefly at St Nicholas' fortress, situated at the entrance to St Anthony's channel. It is one of the strongest maritime fortifications on the Croatian Coast.
Back on the boat, you'll head for Zlarin Island. Cars are not allowed on this island, so you can really appreciate the serenity of nature here with a short walk down the promenade.
Kaprije Island is named for capers -- a tasty ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine. You will have free time on the island to purchase lunch (at your own expense) at a local restaurant.
Your final stop is at Prvic Island, where there are two typical Dalmatian fishing villages -- Prvic Luka and Prvic Sepurine. Take advantage of some free time to stroll here.
Please note: Maximum capacity per boat is eight guests. Private Zodiacs are ordered per boat (not per person), so only one person in the party needs to order the boat. The price shown is the total cost for the English-speaking captain-guide and boat. The number of Zodiacs available is extremely limited, so guests are encouraged to secure their reservation as early as possible. Itinerary may be altered due to weather conditions or guest preferences. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen.
