Zakynthos, the island’s capital, is historically known as the Venice of the South. After the earthquake and fire of 1953, the town was rebuilt preserving the Venetian and Byzantine style wherever possible. The first part of your tour involves a guided walk through the main part of the Zakynthos. You will visit Solomos Square, surrounded by buildings such as the Byzantine Museum, the Church of Saint Nicholas and the Cultural Center of Zakynthos. You will also take a stroll through Zakynthos’ main shopping district. Your next stop will be at the village of Bohali, located under the Venetian fortress, offering an incredible view of Zakynthos and the outskirts as far as the eye can see. You will then enjoy a scenic mountain drive to the Monastery of Anafonitria, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is the oldest monastery on the island (14th century) and is where St Dionysios, Patron saint of Zakynthos, served as abbot for the majority of his life until he died in 1624. The monastery has recently been renovated, uncovering many 15th-century frescos. Your final stop will be at Volimes, a traditional mountain village famous for its handicrafts, rugs, embroideries, china, honey, and pure olive oil. You will have some free time for browsing or shopping before its time for the drive back to the ship.
