Explore the streets of the fascinating Art Nouveau district of Alesund. Its unique architectural style is defined by ornate details, asymmetrical faces and contours meant to resemble plants, animals and flowers.
Alesund, the largest town on the Northwest coast, was destroyed by fire in 1904. German Kaiser Wilhelm heard of the tragedy and sent ships to support the people of Alesund and to assist in rebuilding the city in ‘Jugendstil’ (Art Nouveau) style, which is typical for the first decade of this century. On your walk through the Jugend Quarters, learn more about the city’s rich history and see various examples of this unique architectural style distinguished by numerous spires, towers and detailed ornamentation walking tour.
Experience the fascinating and exciting history that is presented to you through a time machine and multimedia shows that portrays the town before and after the fire. Wander through the many rooms in the listed building known as "The Swan Pharmacy" and be mesmerized by the beautiful and authentic décor.
Please note: It is recommended that guests dress in layered clothing and wear comfortable shoes. This walking tour covers approximately 3 km and involves steps, uneven ground, cobble stone paths, gradual slopes, and is therefore not suitable for guests with any walking difficulties.
