Visit the highlights of the community of Giske, combining history with spectacular scenery. The community of Giske consists of four islands. On this tour, you will visit the two most charming and scenic islands which lie furthest to the west. The drive to Giske & Godoy islands takes you via bridges and underwater tunnels, the longest being 4.2 km/2.6miles.
Giske is known as the Saga Island for the fact that the Viking Chieftain Rollo was born here. Chieftain Rollo was known for the invasion and founding of Normandy in 911. This fairly flat and fertile island had a unique position during the Viking Era and was the seat of one of Norway’s most powerful noble families. On the island, you will visit the old stone church dating back to 1150. The church was originally built as a private chapel for the mighty and noble Giske family. Today, this church is Norway’s only marble church and is still in use.
From Giske, continue on to Godoy Island. On the northwestern side of the island, drive towards the small but picturesque fishing village of Alnes which faces the Atlantic Ocean. Here, you will discover the Alnes Lighthouse established in 1852 to guide fishing boats safely to the harbor. Take a closer look at the lighthouse and climb the stairs to the top to be dazzled by the striking view of the ocean and coastline.
Please Note: It is recommended that guests dress in layered clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. This tour involves optional steps, uneven ground, and gradual slopes. Visibility of sights may be affected in adverse weather conditions. Giske Church is a working church and due to unforeseen church services, an inside visit cannot be guaranteed. Comfort stops available at Giske Church & Alnes Lighthouse.
