A scenic panoramic drive from Amsterdam takes you through a tunnel beneath Zuider Zee Bay and traverses an area of green countryside reclaimed from the sea.
Visit Zaanse Schans -- a faithful recreation of the 17th-century community of Zaan. Stroll along the cobblestone streets to see craftsmen practicing their historic trades and viewing a demonstration of the Dutch art of clog-making. These wooden shoes may look horrifically uncomfortable, but they are quite pleasant to wear. Several of the colorful windmills are open to visitors, as are the bakery, cheese shop and dairy farm, all offering a variety of traditional treats. This open-air museum depicts the Golden Age of the Netherlands’ history often captured in the paintings of the Dutch masters.
In the picturesque town of Edam, renowned for its round, wax-covered cheese, take a guided walk along canals and over drawbridges, past quaint homes and riotous flower gardens. Pronounced ay-dam, this pretty little town has a population of 7,000 and was a whaling port in the 17th century.
A leisurely drive returns you to the ship.
Please note: Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Tour does not operate on holidays.
