Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion
Viticulture was introduced to this fertile region of Aquitaine by the Romans, and intensified in the Middle Ages. The Saint-Emilion area benefited from its location on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and many churches, monasteries and hospices were built there from the 11th century onwards. It was granted the special status of a 'jurisdiction' during the period of English rule in the 12th century. It is an exceptional landscape devoted entirely to wine-growing, with many fine historic monuments in its towns and villages.
There may be no better place to start a visit to the attractive Bordeaux region than at St Emilon, in the very heart of the Merlot grape-growing area. Delicious, rich, round winds are produced here. The vines on the Hill of a Thousand Châteaux march right up to the 13th-century town walls.
This evening, you will visit the main monuments, including the collegial church and its cloister, the ramparts, the marketplace, and the 12th-century Monolithic Church. The latter is a Benedictine monastery that represents a creative use of the natural caves in the cliff face.
Strolling the streets by night, you will also see the Cadene Gate and the King's Tower. Discover the charming nightlife of this village and take in the illumination of its beautiful limestone buildings.
After your guided tour, you'll have free time for shopping, dining (at your own expense), or exploring on your own.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
