Cardiff has been the capital of Wales since 1955 and its rich culture has been influenced by the Romans and Normans, and by the industrial revolution and the coal industry.
Your afternoon tour starts with a panoramic drive through the city. Highlights include the National Museum of Wales, City Hall, the Millennium Stadium, the Wales Millennium Centre, Y Senedd, the parliamentary building for the National Assembly for Wales, and Llandaff Cathedral. The latter is the seat of the Bishop and the Archbishop of Wales and has been a place of worship since AD 570.
In the heart of the capital is Cardiff Castle, with a history that spans 2,000 years. Roman soldiers were garrisoned here, noble knights have held court within its walls, and the fabulously wealthy Bute family later transformed the castle into a romantic Victorian fantasy.
Begin your visit with an audio-visual presentation and take in the views of the city from the rooftop terrace. Then, a guided tour of the castle apartments will reward you with a profound insight into its amazing past. Within the Gothic towers, discover lavish and opulent interiors, rich with murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate woodcarvings. Each breathtaking room has its own special theme, including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decoration. Walk the battlements or visit the Norman keep before you leave.
Next, enjoy some free time to explore Cardiff at your leisure and purchase a refreshment or a lunch (at your own expense).
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Cardiff Castle may be subject to short notice closures for events.
