Leave the pier for an exclusive experience at the Château de Vauville.
Hidden along a sandy bay framed by the Cape of Flamanville and the mighty Nez de Jobourg, the Château de Vauville is a former seigneurial residence. First built by Richard de Vauville during the 12th century, it was rebuilt during the 18th century by Francis Caesar Costentin -- Lord Vauville. The castle is now known for its delightful botanic garden. Take a guided walk through the garden. Created in 1947 and classified as an 'Exceptional Garden' in 2004, the Garden of Vauville is comprised almost exclusively of evergreen plants of a subtropical nature, including about 900 species from the southern hemisphere. In perpetual evolution, this garden results from much work, science and passion. Each windbreak planting creates a 'room' of a different character, adding to the sense of suspense and discovery as you wander about. The garden abounds in escallonias, trachycarpus, cordylines, Lambert cypress creating a series of verdant hollows whose surprising atmosphere is a constant delight.
Next, step inside the castle for a warm welcome from its owners. You will appreciate an authentic French provincial luncheon made using the very best, locally sourced, ingredients served in the family dining room. Hung with centuries-old tapestry, the dining room enjoys a delightful aspect overlooking a charming small garden. Still lived in as a family home, Chateau de Vauville has a very special atmosphere that you will not find anywhere else. Usually closed to the public, the castle is open just for you. Don't miss this chance to be among the few privileged visitors to enjoy this exclusive experience.
After your wonderful, stately meal, drive back to Cherbourg.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
