Departing the pier at Greenock, you'll drive through two of Greater Glasgow's outlying villages — Bearsden and Milngavie.
Located at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills, on the outskirts of Clydebank, Auchentoshan Distillery has a history dating back more than 200 years. Unusually, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. The mash tun at the distillery is a modern stainless-steel semi-Lauter tun with a copper canopy. Generally, the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still (known as the Intermediate Still) helps to give a final spirit strength of 81% ABV (162 proof). This triple distillation, in addition to an unpeated malt, gives Auchentoshan a more delicate, sweeter flavor than many Scotch whiskies.
Inside the Visitor Center, the staff warmly welcomes you with a wee dram of Auchentoshan single malt. Watch a presentation about the history of production.
Then, you'll tour the distillery itself, absorbing the sights, sounds and aromas of the barley intake, mash tuns, washbacks and towering stills. You'll also visit the warehouses, where the casks are stored during the maturation process.
Afterward, journey past the shores of Loch Lomond before taking a short therapeutic break at a quality shopping area. Take in the fantastic views up the loch to Ben Lomond and the Highland Boundary Fault.
Head back to Greenock via Dumbarton — once the center of the Kingdom of the Strathclyde Britons, with its famous fortification on Dumbarton Rock.
