Unlike most other country houses that have changed hands many times, Ardgowan has remained in the possession of one family -- the Shaw Stewarts -- since 1406.
Throwing open its doors to the public for the first time in 600 years, the family cordially invites you to step back in time and explore this stately home steeped in history. It really is a window into a now-lost world.
The Ardgowan tour encompasses Scottish history, local lore and social history. From Robert the Bruce's last stand to Archibald, the Witchfinder General, the Shaw Stewart family's history is a colorful tale of intrigue, love, loss, and outright scandal.
Enjoy a private guided tour of the house with its present-day owner, Sir Ludovic Shaw Stewart, 12th Baronet of Greenock and Blackhall. High Tea is served afterward, offering a glimpse of the Victorian era, which is very recent relative to the house's lifespan.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
