Leaving Galway port behind, you’ll embark on a panoramic drive through County Galway. Pass through Oughterard and Maam before arriving in the town of Cong in neighboring County Mayo. The town of Cong is home to the majestic remains of Cong Abbey founded in the 12th century by Turlough O'Connor, King of Connaught and High King of Ireland. The Market Cross of Cong, in the village, commemorates two former abbots of the monastery, however the village is most famous for the movie The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Scenes from movie were filmed here. Memorabilia from various scenes are featured in the nearby Cottage Museum, designed as an exact replica of the original. Enjoy the beauty of Cong as it is today and imagine how it was when the film was made more than 50 years ago. See the landmark building -- Pat Cohan’s Bar, that was also featured in the movie. You’ll enjoy tea or coffee served with delicious scones before enjoying some free time to explore Cong Village independently.
