From Holy Loch, travel north on the scenic Cowal Peninsula, passing Loch Eck and taking in the views up to Beinn Bheula. Skirting the top of Loch Fyne, famous for its oysters, you'll arrive at Inveraray, crossing the town's rather famous one-lane, humpbacked bridge. From here you'll catch your first glimpse of the sophisticated, fairytale Inveraray Castle.
Built on the site of a 15th-century fortress, Inveraray Castle dates from 1770 and is the seat of the Duke of Argyll, head of Clan Campbell. The wondrous tapestries and artefacts of several generations of collectors, including china and fine furniture, make for a breathtaking interior. Despite its grandeur, the castle is a family home and some of the Argyll family's personal effects lend it an inviting atmosphere. As beautiful and seductive as the interior is, the surrounding immaculately-manicured gardens vigorously compete for the best-in-show award. You may even be lucky enough to encounter a Highland coo nearby. What is this? Brush up on your Scottish accent and it will become clear!
