Step back in time and experience the charm of one of the world’s most celebrated heritage railways—the Ffestiniog Railway. This unforgettable journey combines history, engineering marvels, and the stunning landscapes of North Wales.
Your day begins with a scenic coach transfer from Holyhead, crossing the island of Anglesey with its rolling meadows and farmland, then over the Menai Strait and through Caernarfon to the bustling harbor town of Porthmadog. Once a thriving slate port, Porthmadog offers sweeping views across Tremadoc Bay to the majestic mountains of Snowdonia.
Here, board your steam-hauled narrow-gauge train for a spectacular ride along the oldest Welsh narrow-gauge railway, founded in 1832. Originally built to transport slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the coast, the railway now offers one of the most scenic journeys in Britain. Travel 21 kilometers (13.5 miles) from the coastline deep into the mountains, climbing 213 meters (700 feet) through tranquil pastures, ancient forests, and past shimmering lakes and waterfalls. The route includes dramatic horseshoe bends and even a complete spiral—every twist revealing a new breathtaking vista.
Upon arrival in Blaenau Ffestiniog, rejoin your coach for a drive through Snowdonia National Park to the charming village of Betws-y-Coed, a favorite among walkers and nature lovers. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and take time to explore the village’s quaint shops and scenic riverside setting before returning to Holyhead.
Please Note: This full-day excursion includes approximately 21 km (13.5 miles) by train and scenic coach transfers. Walking during stops is minimal and on level ground. Duration: 7–8 hours including lunch and leisure time. Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended.
