After a short stroll along the pier, put on an all-in-one warm waterproof flotation suit and listen to a safety briefing; then, hop into a deep-sea raft with a driver/guide and set off on a 45-minute journey to Sarnesfjord to inspect some crab pots. The giant king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) was introduced to the Barents Sea by Russian scientists during the 1960s. The crab thrived in these waters, and spread quite rapidly to the west where it can now be found along the northern Norwegian coast. Controlled crab fishing is now allowed -- the meat is delicious and competes with lobster on the commercial market. King crab can live to 30 years old, measure up to 6½ feet between its claws and weigh as much as 22 pounds. The catch in the crab pots you will pull today, however, will most likely weigh between 6½ and 15½ pounds. You will see and be able to take photos of the king crab.
Heading back to shore, you'll enter a lavvo -- a Sami tent with an open fire in the middle. You will sit on the ground on reindeer skins as the crab is prepared and cooked for you to eat as a snack with bread and butter. Mineral water and coffee will also be served.
It is a 15-minute ride in the sea raft back to the pier.
