Icelanders claim that Dynjandi Falls is the most beautiful in this land of a thousand waterfalls. This is your destination today.
From Ísafjorður, a panoramic drive takes you through the breathtaking scenery of the Westfjords region. Unforgiving landscapes, jagged mountain ridges and narrow passes are your constant companions. The coast is lined with steep slopes and deep fjords, where farms and villages huddle together on narrow strips of land that reluctantly yield a living for the hardy Icelanders that tend them. Have your camera handy for the magnificent photo opportunities along the way.
The Dynjandi waterfall itself features a tall upper cascade and tiered terraces, ending with a free-fall into the pool below. It is quite spectacular. Your guide will lead you on a walk up to the falls for a closer view of the main fall and some smaller waterfalls surrounding Dynjandi.
Next, learn about life in northwestern Iceland with a visit to the sustainable-fishing village of Suðureyri. Populated by only 270 people, this tiny fishing community is exceptionally environmentally friendly. The local residents combine Icelandic fishing tradition with eco-tourism to make a living.
It is no exaggeration to state that it is 'all about fish all the time' in this place where the popular Seafood Trail implores you to acquaint yourself with the bounty of the sea. Taste some fish at the local fish-drying sheds as your guide relates the history of the village.
Please note: Wear sturdy walking shoes. The walk up to the waterfall is somewhat demanding with uneven and steep terrain. Views are weather permitting. The fish processing plant may or may not be in full operation at the time of your visit.
