Enjoy a scenic drive southeast from Invergordon before you reach the conservation village of Cawdor and the impressive Cawdor Castle. This truly beautiful, traditional, medieval castle and residence is associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth. The approach is by drawbridge, naturally. Inside, the castle is romantically furnished, and outside, surrounded by exceptionally pretty gardens. Dating back to 1372, the castle is still in the hands of the Cawdor family after nearly seven centuries. History tells that the castle was built on the site where a donkey lay down under a thorn bush. Remarkably the thorn bush is still there to view in the 14th-century tower.
After your visit, there is time to roam through the beautiful gardens and explore one of the last remaining areas of conserved ancient Caledonian Oak Woodland in the UK with an expert Ranger. Identify dry Oakwood, including Birch, Aspen, Rowan, Wych Elm, Holly and Juniper as well as non-native species including North American Red Woods and South American Monkey Puzzles. Look out for animals and birds and learn about the Castle and the family who have lived here for 600 years.
From here, you'll return to Invergordon and the ship.
Please note: There is one flight of steps to reach the second floor of the castle. Flash photography is not allowed inside Cawdor Castle. Large bags cannot be carried inside. Wear comfortable walking shoes, casual clothing, and a waterproof windbreaker.
