Meet magnificent Rothiemurchus Estate -- the jewel of Cairngorms National Park -- owned and cared for by the Grant family for more than 500 years. This very special place has been recognized throughout history for its beauty, its magnificent pine forests, and its abundant wildlife. David Attenborough described Rothiemurchus as "one of the glories of Wild Scotland."
Leave the motorcoach at Drumintoul Lodge and meet the estate's ranger -- your guide to this outstanding property. Enjoy refreshments at the traditional hunting lodge dating back to 1877. The lodge is currently the family home of Lord and Lady Huntingtower (James and Daisy Grant). Admire the loch and views straight through the Lairig Ghru mountain pass into the Cairngorms.
Visit the Home Farm to meet the curious (and extremely good-looking) Highland cows who love to pose for photos. If you've ever had a bad hair day, you'll understand their plight. Meet the herd of red deer, eagerly waiting to be fed by hand. Learn how Rothiemurchus has held on to its traditions and how, with care, it has adapted to ensure the survival of the forest and wildlife. This is an insight into the special relationship between the people and the natural environment. Few places can demonstrate such stewardship of natural heritage.
Return to Drumintoul Lodge for lunch, which includes fresh-baked bread, Rothiemurchus venison stew or vegetarian sweet potato curry, a chocolate brownie dessert, and Scottish cheese and oatcakes.
Return to the port via spectacular country roads.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps.
