Today, you’ll venture to Castle Rushen, where centuries of history unfold within its ancient walls, before boarding a vintage steam train that will transport you through picturesque landscapes on a journey through time.
Take a scenic drive to the southeast of the island. You’ll pass over the Fairy Bridge. Bad luck follows those who cross over without bidding laa mie (good day) to the fairies living under the bridge -- don’t be one of them!
Castletown traces its origins back to AD 1090 and is one of the oldest towns in the British Isles. The market square has changed little since the 1800s. Enjoy some free time to explore on your own here.
Visit magnificent Castle Rushen -- a wonderful example of a medieval castle -- believed to date back to around AD 1200. The castle served as the residence of the last Norse King of Man, who died in 1266. Part of the castle was destroyed in a siege by Robert the Bruce in 1313 and rebuilt around 1344. View the clock presented to the island by Queen Elizabeth I. Curiously, it has only ever had one hand but is still going strong after 400 years.
At Castletown’s railway station, board a steam train on the 125-year-old Victorian line. The railway operates with much of the original rolling stock pulled by the original engines from the 1890s. From the train, enjoy impressive views of the Isle of Man countryside. Arriving at Douglas railway station, a beautiful red brick Victorian structure, you’ll transfer back to the ship.
Please note: Tour sequence may vary. Bring your device to download the audio tour at Castle Rushen. A carriage on the train is reserved exclusively for Seabourn guests. Guests are required to walk to and from the train station; total walking distance on the tour is around 3km.
